OSCON 2008 Session Day 2 for Mozdev

Tagged:  •    •

My second day at OSCON was also terrific. I continued to meet new people and got to spend more time talking with others. There were two sessions that I wanted to see, and they were:

  • Integration Testing PHP Applications - this was a little more overview that I had hoped, but it did go over Selenium and when it's best to use that vs. your own HTML parser (which should hopefully be in PHPUnit 3.3).
  • Top 10 Scalability Mistakes - After some of the "overview"-like talks I had been to, I was pleased to see this one get into a good bit of detail that allows you to plan for specific situations better by giving you some context. I recommend checking out the slides.

I spent most of the afternoon helping out at the Mozilla booth and helping break down the booth when the expo was over. In the evening there was the SourceForge Community Choice Awards at the Jupiter hotel and an after-party called BeerForge at the Bossanova. The Bossanova was a really nice venue (whereas the DJ wasn't amazing) and getting to hang out and talk to various people was great.

I looked through Stephen Lau's photos and selfishly picked out the ones that had myself in it (if only to prove that I'm here):

My own photos from the past couple days are uploading; hopefully I can update the post soon w/ the pictures.

OSCON 2008 Session Day 1 for Mozdev

Tagged:  •    •

Big day at OSCON today. I got into town at 01:00 this morning and taking the cab to the hotel wasn't as bad as I thought it would be (but more expensive than I had planned).

I was able to get a hold of and meet Brian King and David Boswell later in the morning (at normal waking hours) and we met up with Eric Jung as well.

The day was a blur of meeting tons of people; some for the first time, some putting faces to names (or IRC nicks); I attended a number of sessions, also got hang out with a lot of great people from all walks of the Mozilla community.

The sessions I ended up going to were:

  • The Internet is an Ogre: Finding Art in the Software Architecture - this one was pretty good overview of how the Internet is a hard thing to develop for but how a proper architecture can make your life easier
  • PHP Taint Tool: It Ain't a Parser - I was interested in learning about the work done in static analysis for PHP, but it ended up being too technical for me and I tuned a lot out
  • White beautiful code (in PHP) - I really enjoyed Laura's talk and her insights on what can be done to make your code, well, beautiful. I'm hoping to be able to discuss more with her next week at the Summit about some code-structure problems Mozdev has (such as how to architect a good test suite) as well as how Mozdev could integrate with AMO (and thanks for the encouragement on my blog last week!)
  • Firefox Delivered: OSS Infrastructure for the Masses - Justin's talk on Mozilla's infrastructure was great and went over the steps Mozilla has taken to be able to scale to its needs. This was a nice overview of the problems Mozdev might face in the future as it continues to grow.
  • Give Your Site a Boost with memcached - Ben Ramsey's talk on memcached was very helpful for me to solidify questions I had about how memcached can be best integrated into an application without writing a ton of code to handle the interactions between your db layer and caching layer; it was a big help to see some of that in practice

I also participated in the Mozdev-led BoF on Tools and Other Resources for Mozilla Extension Development. This turned out to be a great discussion on what tools are available for extension developers and what we can possibly do to improve things (such as better chrome debuggers, implementing dependency resolution in the update process, and having support for multiple update repositories).

The day ended at the Montage with MoCo and a couple other members of the community. A big thanks to MoCo for allowing us to tag along; it was great to be a part everything that's going on!

Upcoming OSCON/Firefox Summit trip for Mozdev

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •    •    •    •

In 8 days (next Tuesday) I'll be heading to Portland for OSCON 2008. Several days later I'll be heading up to Canada for the Firefox Summit.

This is simultaneously awesome and scary. Awesome parts:

  • Meeting my colleagues and board members from Mozdev for the first time
  • Being able to attend sessions and meet/brainstorm with so many people from the open source community, and more specifically, the Mozilla community

Some of the scary parts:

  • I haven't flown in a long time. I have no idea what to expect from the experience, and have some gaps in some basic logistical processes (How do I get from the airport to the hotel? Taxi? How's do I get a taxi? What's the typical interaction between taxi driver and drivee (never taken a taxi, either))? What do I do for 7 hours in the air? Are my neighbors in coach going to call me a terrorist for playing with my laptop and GPS? Will I be able to use my GPS? Am I carrying too much/little gear/clothes/etc?).
  • I'm an introvert, and thus don't really talk unless being spoken too; even then, if it's a topic I'm not familiar and/or interested in with I don't do a great job at "chit-chat"
  • I don't have a very, um, "cultured palate". I plan on trying to broaden that a bit.
  • I have no idea what I'm doing at either event - oh, in general I know I'm going to help grow the Mozdev/Mozilla community (they're very symbiotic) and learn what I can from the sessions being offered at both, but there's a lot of "unknowns" about what I should be doing.

So most of the "scary" parts are probably just personality quirks and I really think I'll be fine, even if I don't have all my minutiae in order. It'll definitely be an big experience for me.

Reflecting on FUDCon

Tagged:  •    •    •

This past weekend was great; I met a lot of people I've only seen in IRC or on mailing lists, hacked on MyFedora (mockup) a bunch, attended and filmed a bunch of sessions, and just tried to get some of the "Fedora vibe" and see how everyone interacts.

Todd and I arrived at the hotel late Thursday night, around 22:30. We visited the lobby for a bit to see if any Fedorites where there, but there weren't. I informed Todd about the dress code for the NCSU State Club and we promptly decided to hit Walmart. Unfortunately, they closed at 23:00 so we were SOL for the night. Back to the room to hang out on IRC for a bit and sleep.

Up early Friday to get breakfast and pants at Walmart. The State Club at NCSU was an awesome place; I should have pictures up soon, hopefully. While there were a number of sessions going on, I ended up in the Fedora Infrastructure room working on MyFedora with John (J5) Palmieri, Luke Macken, and Toshio Kuratomi. My python's not nearly as good as my PHP (mostly just lack of understanding basic structures and what classes are available), but I was able to pickup enough about the TurboGears framework they were using to get the widget configuration written and aide in the basic design of the RSS widget so that we can write new widgets in only 3 lines of code!. I was really surprised at the number of people that turned out for the hackfest, and apparently so was Fedora; at 78 people total, it was over twice what they were expecting and had planned for lunch! The staff at the State Club were great, though; the food was excellent as well.

Friday evening Todd and I went out with a large group to eat and sat down with Kevin Fenzi and his girlfriend. Afterward we all went back to the hotel bar to hang out with a bunch of other Fedorians.

Saturday was the Barcamp and was I was surprised to see how many showed up for this event. Max's opening State of Fedora address was great; it was very nice to get insight from someone that has to have a high overview of what Fedora has done and where it is going. He also announced Paul Frields taking over, and even from the little I was able to see of him, it looks like we'll be in good hands.

I managed to get to about 4 sessions out of the various blocks throughout the day. Everyone attended Michael Tiemann’s talk on “Fedora in the Enterprise" which turned out to be a great discussion on how enterprises can and need to contribute to the open source process. Next I attended Mike McGrath's talk on Fedora Infrastructure and how they're both similar and different from your regular IT shop. After lunch (provided by Fedora) I hit up the MyFedora talk lead by John, then decided to take a break and hang out in the big room while the Cobbler talk was going on. I picked up at the end of Seth Vidal's talk on Yum/CreateRepo to ask about "suggested packages". I was glad to hear that they've definitely have though of this, and while there are some technical problems (RPM would need to support it) it's more of a problem of "how do we present this to the user". I'll definitely have to keep an eye on this and see if any of the other upcoming technologies like PackageKit could help frame this any better. My last session for the day was the TurboGears talk by Luke. Out of all those sessions, I managed to film the State of Fedora address, Fedora in the Enterprise, Fedora Infrastructure, MyFedora, and the TurboGears sessions - I have some transcoding to do, it seems ;-)

Saturday night was FUDPub; first at the Flying Saucer where Fedora bought the first round (thanks!) and then onto a couple other bars; one with karaoke, one without. I mostly avoided the karaoke one and hung out with people at the other one (I can't remember either bar's names).

We arrived a bit late to Sunday's hackfest; I got to work on MyFedora again and almost managed to get user-to-widget associations saving. Well, actually, I think that part works, but there's some minor detail about restoring the widgets. Sunday wasn't nearly as productive as I would have liked, but with people running around trying to rebook cancelled flights and exhausted from such a great weekend, it's not surprising.

We ended up leaving around 14:00 and got back to my place about 20:45. Long drive, but the trip was definitely worth it to meet all the people and learn lots of new things; most of which I probably am not even aware of yet. Here's to another great year for Fedora!

FUDCon 2008 this weekend

Tagged:  •    •    •

Heading down with Todd Zullinger today to Raleigh, NC to hit up FUDCon.

I'm pretty excited about this trip; I've been a user of Red Hat products for about 9 years now, and while I've done some packaging for several years I've only recently become a Fedora contributor and have been trying very hard to improve my packaging and am finally getting into seeing what other areas I can help with.

While both Todd and I are signed up for the GPG keysigning session (I wish there were more people going to that), I think I'll probably head over to the yum hackfest to see what I can learn about RPM and yum to see what could be done to improve "suggested packages" support.

I also have a lot of interest in the sysadmining, so I might checkout the Infrastructure hackfest, and I'd also love to see a better init system, so I might head there.

Overall, there's a ton of stuff to try to take in at this short gathering, and I hope I can make the most of it.

I'll also have my new Canon HG10 camcorder and a recently-purchased Canon DM-50 shotgun microphone to bring to the event, so I'll be taking videos of the sessions. Feel free to try to grab me if you have any other ideas for things I could take videos of.

My biggest concern with the videos is going to be what quality to store them in; 5.5 hrs at 15Mbps doesn't sound like much for the whole weekend, but I don't know if we want lower quality or not (if the final result is just YouTube, it probably doesn't matter). I would appreciate any ideas people have about this.

Sheller Wedding in St. Mary's

Tagged:  •    •

This past weekend we went to St. Mary's, PA to attend a wedding; that was quite the drive.

We drove about 3.5 hrs on the way there (left around 05:15) on the 29th, then came back Sunday morning the 30th and took about 4.5 hrs.

The wedding was very nice; the first time I've been to a catholic ceremony. It was much shorter than I expected at about 45 minutes, and other than some ceremonial differences it really wasn't that different from the other protestant weddings I've been to.

The reception was also very nice; it was held at a country club where they had the entire dining facility booked. We had hoped to do more dancing, but things drug on a little too long and Jocelyn needed to get back to the hotel so we left.

The drive back we tried to see some elk (the big thing in the north, apparently) and succeeded. Those pictures should hopefully be uploaded soon.

In the meantime, enjoy these profile charts and maps of the trip.

FogBugz demo in Philadelphia

Tagged:  •    •

Yesterday Scott González and I went to see the FogBugz demo with Joel Spolsky.

We mostly went to see Joel speak about software and how running a software team works. We figured we would get some insights as to how things should run while Joel was demoing FogBugz, and we were right.

The demo itself was pretty short, but we did get to gleam some more ideas of how software companies should be run. FogBugz itself seems pretty neat; it's very well-written and streamlined. FogCreek has obviously put a lot of thought into how the users (developers) should use the system. A lot of the attendees seemed very impressed and seemed to at least respect Joel's reasons for why this or that thing was the way it was.

I also ran into Nick and Matt Auger - Nick recognized me once I said "Hi" and we chatted for a couple minutes. It was neat to run into someone I knew a couple hours from home.

So was the demo worth the 4 hrs round trip of driving, $20 of parking, and $10 of tolls? Probably not. You'd probably get just as much insight about software design from reading Joel's site or his books. But it was a nice excuse to see Phily for a bit.

Visiting the Shipes and Littles

Tagged:  •    •

This weekend Tiff, Jocelyn and I made a small loop through Virginia to visit the Shipes (my sister) and the Littles (Dennis and Michele).

First stop was Barboursville, VA on Friday afternoon. We dropped my nephew Logan off at my sister's. He was up visiting for the week and since we were going to visit Dennis it was kind-of "on the way." We got down there around 5pm and stayed until 9pm. It was nice to visit for a bit, but it'll be nicer when we go visit over Labor Day weekend for a couple days.

So Friday night we headed over to Short Pump, VA where Dennis and Michele live. We got there around 10:15pm and laid Jocelyn down for the night.

Saturday we kinda just hung out a lot. In the morning we went for a walk around Maymont and looked at the animals. We tried to do some shopping in the evening but didn't make it. I did get to see Dennis' new office in the Verizon building which was pretty nice; looks like he's been making lots of progress cleaning up their IT stuff and cable mess. Dennis and Michele made us supper, and we just sat around and talked a lot.

Sunday after Michele made us breakfast we tried to get out a bit more. We did some shopping at some local kid-to-kid clothing stores to pickup outfits for Jocelyn, went to lunch at The Smokey Pig (which is non-smoking now - yeah!), and picked up a canal ride in the afternoon. We watched Meet the Fockers (which was pretty good - better than I had expected) and chatted some more.

Monday we left in the morning. I ended up missing the exit for I-495 on the way towards DC and ended up going past the Pentagon while trying to get back over to it. We still made good time - only 4 hours to get home with a lunch break!

It was great to get to spend some time with Dennis and Michele this weekend. A lot has definitely changed with Tiff and I since Jocelyn has joined us - our focus is definitely on taking care of her right now and it's a lot more difficult for us to be spontaneous and loud. I'm glad they were willing to accommodate and accept that change in our lives - it doesn't just affect us, it affects everyone we interact with.

Jocelyn had a great time down there, too. She was up until about 10:30pm every night (usual bedtime is 8:30 - 9pm), but she did sleep in until about 9am (usual wake up is 6 - 6:30 am). She had lots of time going for the walk at Maymont and the canal ride and playing with Dennis and Michele.

Hopefully Bella (their cat) will be a little more comfortable with Jocelyn next time - she didn't come out of their bedroom until Monday morning - probably due to hunger!
